Our shelter ambassador program has been running for almost two years now, and since its beginning, we've held fundraisers, engaged with people all around the world on our Instagram, and shared countless shelter cat stories, none of which could be done without your help. Now, we want to focus on something different; the amazing faces behind the scenes!
You may have read Griffin’s amazing story about volunteering, and adopting, at our shelter (and if not, click here to read Griffin’s experience after this!), but now we’re turning our focus to another inspirational face: Augustine “Gus” Strickland.
Gus is an 18 year-old weekend volunteer who graduated from Mullumbimby High School this year. His older sister is also a volunteer at our cat shelter, helping with the cats during the week. We asked Gus some questions about his volunteer experience, so read on to hear what he has to say!

How long have you been volunteering for?
6 months.
Did you have much experience with cats before the shelter?
I have two cats at home - Effy (11) and Morty (3). They are shelter cats adopted from here and Mullum. Morty is a fat rat catcher and Effy doesn’t like having Morty in the house. Luckily they can keep separate.
Do you help out with them much at home?
Yes. I pat them and feed them.
Why did you choose to volunteer?
I like to do volunteer work and be around animals.
[Gus’ mum, Vanessa, also added here that he likes to stay busy and do something consistent every day of the week, so the routine of the shelter is perfect!]
What does your typical day look like at the shelter?
I do the morning shift, so I say hi to all of the cats, feed them, then do all of the kitty litters. After they’ve each had a free range I put them back in their enclosures.

What has been your favourite part of volunteering?
Spending time with Lyla, my favourite cat. I love to come and see her, she’s been here since I started volunteering.
What do you want to do now that you’ve graduated?
I want to work at the bowling alley [where Gus spends one of his weekdays], go shopping and be a zookeeper.
You once said you wanted to bring your school to the shelter for an excursion, why is that?
I want to bring my friends all here to visit!
What are the best ways you think other people can help shelters and their animals?
I think more people should come to the cat shelter and volunteer, as well as donate.
